And for most of us, this is a well known fact. However, what many of us may not realize is, recent studies have shown that the brain, releases a certain set of chemicals, when people are in love.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These chemicals include Pheromones, Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Serotonin. Without getting technical, the outcome is a feeling of euphoria or excitement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This chemical effect and lust, is said not to last more than a couple of months, and is the initial emotion which is experienced in romantic love.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second stage of Love is, attraction, and is usually based on physical attraction, common interest, and attributes, such as money, status, job title, standing in the community, popularity, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first two stages of love, lust and attraction, are NOT enough to create a long term relationship. The third stage of love, "attachment" is needed to sustain a long term relationship.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It should be noted, that attachment is avoided, at all cost by some lovers, especially if they have been hurt in the past. This usually is the case, when a couple has been dating for two or three months, and everything is great until one day, one partner makes a sudden move to exit the relationship. Fear of attachment can be a huge stumbling block, when trying to get your mate man or woman to say, "I do."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the feeling of excitement and euphoria, wear thin after a couple of months, this is where mature actions, must be applied if a relationship is to last. For some, the lost of that euphoria is too much, and they follow the feeling to a new relationship and start all over again with someone new.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A love story follows the events when a couple makes it through all three stages. Movies, novels, and short love stories which provide this type of entertainment, provide a way for the viewer or reader to "remember," when they too felt that way. One day, while trying to escape the amorous pursuit of Aristaeus, Eurydice inadvertently stumbled straight into a lair of snakes and was bitten fatally on her legs. The distraught Orpheus played and sang mournful songs that finally moved the gods and the nymphs to restore his lost love to him. However, as with most love stories, this one, too, did not have a happy ending. And he lost Eurydice for the second time, but this time for all eternity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you notice? None of the love stories really had a 'happy ending'. They all ended with either one, or both, lover dying at the end, usually due to some colossal misunderstanding. It may not appear to be a love story at all. You might as well say that it is absurd. This is the problem in life. When we talk about life, they say it seems to be a story, and when we tell them a story, they say there is nothing like a story in it. We see and do all these things in our daily life. Even then a story is a story. It is your verdict now whether it is a story, or everyday incident of life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like many other evenings of the past years, the hero of our story, sitting on the raised wall along the Marine drive in Bombay, waiting for his heroine, is watching the play of the waves in the Arabian Sea. The sun has just disappeared behind the horizon, and it appears that before going it has spilled many buckets full of crimson colors. The colors have scattered over the horizon.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The hero may be called by any name. He may be between 22 and 28 years of age. He might be graduate, or post graduate. He could be a clerk in a bank or a private firm, or simply a store keeper in a factory. There are hundreds of such openings in this metropolitan city for the hero or the men like our hero. It hardly makes any difference whether he does this or that. He might be living in a slum, or sharing a room with four other roommates, or he could be a paying guest. It is also possible that our hero lives in a lodge and gets a bed in a room where twelve other persons sleep. One thing is for sure that he can not afford to pay even for a single room apartment.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He could have married his heroine many months before and he would not be waiting for her. Looking at his watch, he thought she should have come by now. He had been sitting there for about an hour. He had met her at this very place, about two years before. Her life was almost similar to his. She might be called by any name, or she might be a degree holder. Though she lives in her own house. Her circumstances are a little better than his but many things were the same. Perhaps, these similarities had brought them closer. The hero is an outsider and she is the native of the city. The heroine has very common appearance. Her dark complexion, sometimes, makes her feel inferior.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wait a second, for I feel that for the convenience of this narrative we should give them names so that while reading their story we should feel that they are living beings too, and though simple they have their life too. They have their identities too. The story is from India, so let's call them Bharat and Bharati.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is a coincidence that Bharati writes poems as well. Our hero and heroine who will be identified by the names of Bharat and Bharati are two very common people. They are very honest but suppressed by the society. Their lives can be summed up in three words-struggle, struggle, and struggle. Though they have not tasted success, they could have climbed all the stairs had they been given a chance. They did not get any chance to do so, in spite of being worthy of it. In a way, they can not be blamed for their predicament. They are neither the first nor the last of the couples who became the victims of the circumstances. In fact there is a long story behind it, and we will have to digress for a while to enter the story behind our present story. Yes, it is true that we will come to know more about our hero and heroine, and as a result they will be nearby us. Wherever possible, they will tell their story by themselves. So, it was the 50th independence day of the country. This year was no different from the preceding years. It made no difference to them. But this year, the celebrations were going to be grand, with the government funding. Our hero and heroine were totally indifferent to these festivities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking at Bharat, waiting for Bharati, one could guess what was going on in his mind. He might be thinking about his village, his sick father, his old mother, his unemployed younger brother, and his sister who was waiting to be married, or he might be worried because he had not been able to send them money order this month. It was also possible that he had been fired from his job. It could be Bharati's birthday and he was thinking about buying a small present for her. May be, it was a holiday and he had not a penny in his pocket. It was possible that he had to pay his room rent, or he had promised to take her out to dinner but he had no money. There were innumerable possibilities like these. It is also possible that all our surmises are wrong, and the young man has come to Marine drive to get fresh air and enjoy the freshness of the evening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why hadn't things changed in fifty years after the departure of the British masters from India? The growth, in a sense, was more negative than positive: more population, more unemployment, more crimes, and more deaths, more of almost every thing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our hero remembers his days when he had left the college. He had to stand in queues, sometimes in front and sometimes last. Jobs were difficult to come by. He had been cheated everywhere. No lucky opportunity had come to him. His first job was in the Municipal Council. He was eighteen years old at that time. It was about ten years ago. Paying one hundred rupees to the officer in the employment exchange, he had his got his name written with much struggle. On his first day in the office, he realized that his work was to spray insecticides in the lanes and by lanes of the city to eradicate mosquitoes. The condition was that he had to have his own bicycle. To refuse meant he would have to be unemployed for the following three months, and to accept meant, he could not apply for any other job for the six months to follow. An old cycle he got from a neighbor whose children he used to teach in the evenings. Unfortunately, the job lasted for three days only. Though there were thousands of people who were involved in much worse jobs in the country, he could not convince himself to kill mosquitoes for more than three days. It doesn't mean that he never got angry; the anger shows its effect by harming own existence of such unemployed young men. Some of such unemployed young men were unable to tolerate the agony of life and chose suicide as the last resort, and many others took to unfair means of earning money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now about our heroine. She was the youngest of the five sisters. Three elder sisters were married. The father was a retired bank clerk. Her mother had passed away when she was only ten. After her graduation, she started working as a teacher in a local school. She was 19 at that time. Old father was mostly sick, and she had to arrange his medicines. His pension was hardly enough to feed them. Now she is working in an office of a company. The circumstances are slightly better than they were.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bharat and Bharati do want to get married and start a new life in their own world, but the bondage of families is the main hindrance. He knows that his old parents and young brother wait for the money he sends, and she knows that it would not take long for her father to die of his sickness if she decided to leave the house and go with Bharat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Suddenly, our hero's face begins to beam; he notices her slow approach. He gets to his feet. She seems to be in a hurry. "My father is in Bombay hospital. I will have to go," she said hurriedly. She had a kind of pain for him in her eyes. She knew that she was not doing much for him, and she also knew that Bharat was the boy she had wanted to spend her life with. I realised that what she required was a lot of attention and a lot of walks.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On one of these walks I got chatting to quite a pretty young lady. She asked me the name of the dog and stated that she had often noticed me taking her for walks. I must admit that I had not once noticed her. It was quite a short conversation but I left feeling that this lady had an interest in me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the next few weeks I seemed to bump in to her on a regular basis, she stated on one occasion that she was my stalker, I was quite happy to have her as a stalker!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This lady seemed quite confident and one particular morning she started to ask me a lot of questions:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is your name?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Where do you live?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Where do you work?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How would you like to go on a date with me?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I could not believe it and without hesitation agreed. He headed straight to it, with his left eye now so blurry and could not see clearly the beauty of this blue ocean. Though his right eye was shooting with pain caused by his sudden fall from the sky, as he remembered, he took off from the jet as instructed, but now his right eye was totally blind, yet he still managed to run fast to reach the ocean. But as he approached the open sea, the water was so clear that he began to dip his barefoot on it but was surprised of what he saw. He saw his reflection. He got up and then started to approach the ocean to splash in, but it stopped him when he noticed a lady struggling to get up. She is the Princess of this Lost Island of Nowhere. Every day, she comes to the ocean to swim but she cannot swim. She does only to give herself the enjoyment of dreaming that one day she will meet her king and brought her out away from this island that had left her captive for several years now. The strange people in this island kept her here because they need her beauty to shine on them. The people in this island give her all her wishes except that she cannot leave, she should stay. She knew at the back of her mind that she does not belong there. Although she receives all the luxury she can ask for, she knew in her heart that she misses something. She just cannot figure it out yet what it is that even though she cannot swim she keeps coming to this ocean and always looking afar. She believes in her heart that there is another world beyond that blue ocean.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He knew that if he will approach the lady and help her get up safely on the shore, how would he, he is a monkey. "I would scare her off!" his mind argues to himself. But he looked around and everybody is busy, no one notices the princess. He bravely approached her and when the princess shouted for help, his hand was ready to catch her and brought her on the shore. The princess must have hurt herself so bad that all she could think of is to have herself on the shore and did not even notice that a monkey had helped her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He assisted her to sit down and just watched her. He noticed how beautiful she was and has wanted her for himself.:"But not in this world, I am a monkey" he murmured to himself. The princess looked up and she was surprised that a monkey helped her. But she was not scared at all. She found this monkey harmless. He got white fur and smart deep brown eyes which are now locked so curious staring on her shapely body. Her cotton shirt now soaked and wet baring her sexy hips and full rounded breasts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She smiled at him so sweetly and she appreciated his help. That was the day it started. The adventures of the astronaut monkey had begun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every now and then the Princess has a day to look onto. She makes sure to find quality time spending her day with her new found friend in the island, this white mischievous monkey.&lt;br /&gt;She found him very funny and adorable. There is no dull moment when she is with him. She learns to swim because of him. She cannot imagine that every time the monkey began to splash on the water, he swims like a frog. He jumps, he can go deep down the water without worry of drowning. She enjoys the company of this amazing animal. Where he came from, definitely she had no idea. She just thought that perhaps he is lost too, like herself. She woke up one day and here she found herself she is the Princess of this Lost Island of Nowhere. But spending time to this monkey lets her not bother herself to ask why she is here in this island at the moment. All she can think of now is to spend quality time with her new friend. "I am not worry at all anyways this monkey talks, and he is smart, I kind a like his company, he never bore me", she thought deeply on this but then again she had this wish that one day she will be out from this Lost Island of Nowhere.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In another universe there lives a gorgeous Queen. She is known as a mother, a sister, a friend and they all call her as the Queen of All the Cookies That Is. One thanksgiving night she gathered all her children and all the people. Everybody has all their fun and eat their heart out celebrating this precious moment with their kind and loving Queen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When the party was over the Queen went up to her glorious tower. She went straight to her comfortable and soft bed to sleep the night away and look forward for the coming new day. He was very successful on achieving this and then he came up on another breakthrough on having an astronaut monkey to fly but with the mind of the real human being. He completed this special machine and said to himself that he should make the exploration by himself first. Once succeeded with this mission he will sit as the crown king of the Limbo Universe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All the planets in the Limbo Universe cheered on him when his super jet set on. The Limbo super jet reached a space from where an astronaut monkey was ready to fly and explore the galaxy but with the special gadget and chemicals injected to his veins that his brain is somehow connected to a real human brain. This chemicals and gadget injected to the monkey's veins will serve as a connector and bridge to another body that has the same content injected. A wave like particles which is not seen by the naked eye will transmit and receive information to and from the body to the other living body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Capt. Cake went to sit to his unique invention machine. His officers helped him, injected the same special gadget and chemicals that was also given to the monkey. His eyes are left open but he was sent to sleep deeply. He will be aware on everything that the monkey will see, feel and experience during the exploration but his human body will remained safe and seated on his machine.&lt;br /&gt;10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.....the monkey's rounded jet sets off. Then the monkey is instructed to jump off....and he did.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For several days, since he landed to this Lost Island of Nowhere, he never saw anything that interests him at all. The land is very rich but it lacks life. The only best thing happens every day in his world as a monkey is the Princess of the land. He promised himself to chase the princess wherever universe she belongs to. He will be crowned King of Limbo Universe once he finished this mission, so he intended to bring his chosen queen to his palace. He knows the monkey's body won't last long to live in this island. The chemical is set for only a week time then the monkey's body dies. But the gathered facts that took place in the event since the monkey landed until the monkey's body wears off will stay recorded to Capt. Cake's brain as vividly as if he experienced it all by himself. That is the beauty of his new breakthrough invention. And it worked. All the planets in his universe will be very proud of what he had accomplished. All human beings of the galaxy will be safe in time of war if there is any anyways....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's time", his mind wonders as the monkey sits under the coconut shade where he waits for the Princess to come. He becomes weak now. He chose just to sit and wait for his princess. As soon as the princess arrived, he expressed his thoughts to her the beauty and sweetness of just doing nothing but only cuddling the one he fancy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They just sit there together side by side. After few minutes he began to struggle, his body trembled and his temperature went down because the chemical has expired and is totally gone now. The Princess gently brought his head near her right chest. Slowly he looked up and once again stared on her beautiful face and said. "I can't explain to you what magic happened with me with you in this island but you really make me feel something and I will search for you all my life". I will find you and when I do you will remember me once you looked on my eyes, you knew it's me", and then with eye opened, he's gone. Her heart sobbed with loneliness but she was touched by this monkey and gave her faith that one day they will meet again in another universe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's time, Capt. Cake, It's time", the first officer woke him as the alarm clock beeped. Capt. Cake wakes up feeling like his eyes are full with sands. His first officer put eye drops on both eyes. He closed them, and relaxed awhile and then automatically the events rewind by his mind. He remembers everything. No doubt he is again into mission but this time to search for the Princess and she will be the queen for the Limbo Universe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He has this strong feeling that the Princess is there, somewhere waiting for him. So he bounded a journey to travel around the galaxy to search for her, but his first stop is to land to the Cookie Universe. He landed to the Cookie Universe and all the children cheer with joy. Capt. Cake is known to the entire galaxy. He went straight ahead to the tower where the Queen of All Cookies That Is has been sleeping for years, to give his honor to her kingdom. One of the children opened the queen's room for him. He could not believe his own eyes. Lying there is the Princess of the Lost Island of Nowhere. She is beautifully sleeping so deeply and peacefully with mouth half opened. He has this urge right away to give her a kiss. He sat on her left side, he bended his head and give her a long kiss. In split seconds she opened her eyes and there she saw those smart deep brown eyes and truly she remembers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For few minutes she has held him near her right chest and he had told her "I will come back and get you out from this Lost Island of Nowhere and you will remember me once you laid your eyes on me". She gathered herself up carried the limp body of the monkey in her arms and walked straight to the blue sea. Slowly, she went as deep as she could still reach the ground. She lifted her arm a bit to kiss the monkey's lips lightly and then slowly and gently she dropped her arms, she released the monkey's body and let it float on the ocean. She floated too and had found herself lying on her soft bed now steady looking on this man's eyes and kissing her so sweetly. She experienced a glimpse of an adventure while she was sleeping with the adventurous and mischievous astronaut monkey.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Capt. Cake and the Queen of All Cookies That Is held and kissed each other sweetly and lovingly with their eyes opened. They both know and understand the adventures they shared each other in that Lost Island of Nowhere...They do not need to talk about it. They look for the NOW. The success and happiness for the unity of their universe.....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The story may be in some way have similarities to actual events happened in real life only it is written in a humor-like romance and fantasy. I lived in a house that wasn't a home, filled with drug addicts and predators and I was the child with a key around my neck. My Mom wasn't home much because she had to work to support two children as a single mother without child support so I grew up feeling very rejected and alone. Do you see the pattern?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't blame my Mom for what happened to me. If it hadn't been that way, I wouldn't have grown up to be who I am today. My brother succumbed to the drug life by the age of seven and I said no. There but the Grace of God go I, really. I grew up with my older brother seeking me out for help and guidance, and calling me Mom most of the time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;His escape at a very young age was drugs and alcohol and mine was food. Either I didn't eat at all, acting out my anorexia or I ate ravenously, something I still struggle with today. Food was the only thing I could control in my own life and the way I learned to punish myself for being so "bad." Why did I think I was bad? My reasoning as a child was; if I were a good girl, no one would harm me. Therefore, I must be very bad and I was being punished for being so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the age of eight, I started on a journey to discover why these men sought to harm me and why I was so ugly, stupid, fat and horrible. I ravenously read every book I could find at the school library during lunch, and magazines at home. Once I was older and had a job (age 12) I bought books and music, even though I needed clothing and food more. It started me on a journey that hasn't stopped; my love of what makes people tick and how relationships work or don't.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's move to events that are more recent. With all my education and studying, I still ended up in the "wrong" relationship. Why? I had changed my pattern, or so I thought. I picked people with different backgrounds, different careers, different education levels, different socio-economic backgrounds and different looks. What was wrong? I always seemed to pick the man who would treat me the worst. The "good" ones only wanted to be my friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During that time, I was sought after by friends and family, and people who were referred to me to help them understand themselves and their relationships. Why was I able to help them and not myself? I knew the basic rule that I must love myself before anyone else would love me, but I knew that I could never love myself. I was too ugly. Too fat. Too stupid. In addition to any other horrible adjectives I could throw at myself. So I hid myself even further.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The laws of attraction that most of us have heard, but practically no one adheres too, ruled over me. I only attracted those that would hurt me the most because I spent most of my spare time hurting myself mentally with words and physically with food. I hadn't changed the way I felt about myself, so how could I expect the men in my life to change the way they treated me?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One day, while I was sitting with my then-boyfriend a revelation came over me. The words I had read about, studied and preached to others hit me full in the face. I deserve better and I am not junk. This man, who had been a dear friend for years, was my boyfriend now and he was horrible to me! He was a great friend but sucked at the boyfriend gig.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I sat in the room with a bunch of NFL people, I realized many of these men and women needed to score points with themselves and their "loved" ones and not just put a show on so others thought they did. That's when the title, "Winning Points With The Woman In Your Life One Touchdown at a Time - How to Score For Men and Women" came to my mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At first, I fought writing this book. How could I possibly mix football and love? I wasn't even a huge football fan! However, once I sat down to do so it came out quickly (I learned a lot about football along the way!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next step I took to write the book was to interview men and women on the street to find out what their thoughts were about relationships and what made them crazy in them. A year and a half of research later I started the real journey of self-discovery. I wasn't the horrible, awful, ugly person I believed deep in my soul I was. I was a kind person who struggled with her weight, but that didn't mean I didn't deserve the best.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was also at that point that I realized I was much happier being single than being in a relationship and I started to practice the self-love I always spoke and wrote about. For two years, I wrote and I was happy - elated actually. People would stop me on the street just to say how much I glowed. It was amazing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They say love comes when you least expect it, and that's what happened to me. It was during my time of happy singleness, that I met the man who would turn out to be my soul mate. We talked for hours and I mean truly talked. I had never really had such in-depth conversation with anyone!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nevertheless, I ran scared. A month later, I was in a relationship with a man who was fun but a player. After a month with him, I realized what I was doing and headed as fast as I could in the other direction. I called up the other man and we went on our first date. He was kind and sensitive (gorgeous to boot) and he even sidestepped me from doggy poop on our hike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We spent the entire afternoon and well into the wee hours of the next morning just talking and laughing. However, when I left him for my car I knew I wasn't going to date him. My mom called me the next day and asked me how the date had gone. I told her what a wonderful time I had and how wonderful he was. I then stated firmly, "...but I am not going to date him." She said, "oh...how sad."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Something clicked inside me at that moment and I turned around and said, "No way! I am going to date him." And that's just what I did. In that instance I made a choice (and you can too) to change my dating pattern. I was going to go for the man I wasn't attracted too. The man who didn't have the element of "danger," which is what seemed to be underlying in all the other men I had dated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That was nearly two years ago and I am still totally in love as he is with me. We literally spend almost all of our time together (we work side by side as well) and while we have occasional disagreements, we always apologize. We are a normal couple after all! He really is the most incredible man I have ever known.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what changed and how can you change your life so you can attract the one person that will treat you like gold? I go over that a lot in Winning Points With The Woman In Your Life One Touchdown at a Time (Simon and Schuster - Fireside). Despite the title, this book is for both sexes and is not all about Football. While I do use football language in the book, it's not a football book per se.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the crux of it is this, first your must make a decision to love yourself and treat yourself with respect and second you must make a decision to change your life, which includes your love life. It's that basic. No one can give you a magic pill or potion and no words can change anything in your life until you make a decision and commitment to yourself to change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A final word...is my life perfect? Nothing is perfect, but I am perfectly in love. Do I still struggle with my self-esteem? Yes. It's like any addictive behavior. When you are addicted to self-abusive behavior, it's something you must keep in check. However, I do love myself and I don't talk to myself as I used to. I also believe I deserve love and respect.&lt;br /&gt;Do I still struggle with my weight? Yes. That disease will be a life-long struggle. Just like an alcoholic, I have to take it one day at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I encourage you to work towards the best relationship that you deserve. Americans were in the throes of the Great Depression and many were out of work and standing in long bread lines. Times were tough.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The year 1932 would also mark the beginning of a great American love story that would last for 75 years and still be going strong as of this writing! This is not your typical love story, not by a long shot. But it is indeed a story filled with love, and comradeship, heartbreak, sacrifice, and sheer joy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is the story of three American men who have been best buddies since the ages of 12, and 13, when first they met and started playing sandlot baseball together. Little did they know at the time, that their new friendship would last throughout all their high school days, World War II, and continue to flourish throughout their lives, even though geographical locations would eventually separate them physically.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But true friendship survives distance and circumstances. These three men are living proof of that. They share a unique bond that most of us would envy. They are emotional doppelgangers of each other.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They started out in those prewar years, playing sports - varsity baseball, basketball and football, all of them excelling or lettering in one sport or another. This was their life. Life was good despite the times. They were young and all that mattered was sports and listening to, and dancing to, the sounds of the Big Bands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Living in south New Jersey, it was only a hop, skip and a jump to the Jersey shore where they would go to the Steel Pier in Atlantic City to listen to Benny Goodman and other well known musicians. Sports, Big Band music and the three of them together. It just didn't get any better than this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the men is my dad, Jack "6 for 6" Letzgus as we call him, having earned that monicker for getting a hit in 6 successive turns at bat (four singles and 2 triples). He played semi-professional ball, in one game even hitting three triples, tying a national record. Who knows what heights he would have achieved had it not been for the war. As his friend Ted Lewin said "Jack, the war interfered with our baseball careers." My dad was described as a husky third sacker, although later, years of suffering from a very bad duodenal ulcer would see his slender but well built body diminish to a mere 132 pounds on his 5'10" frame.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our next door neighbor had commented that "Poor Jack is going downhill. I can see it each day. He won't be around long." If only she were alive today to see him a mere 2 ½ years away from his 90th birthday. She wouldn't believe it. I can't believe it either. He's even healthier today than he was in his twenties through his sixties. The adage "You can't keep a good man down" is apropos in this situation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The school years were now coming to a close. They would graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, New Jersey, in 1938. But one of the three is a bit younger than my dad and the other friend. His graduation year would be different...or at least it should have been.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim Dunn is the baby of the three, a mere 86 now compared to my dad's and Ted's 87 years. He had skipped a grade in elementary school and for some reason he would have graduated a half a year ahead of my dad and Ted. School calendars were a bit different back then and they had half years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim wasn't going to graduate without his two best buddies though, so he did something that most people would not do. He purposely failed a grade so that he would be put back and graduate in 1938 along with my dad Jack, and Ted. Most kids are anxious to get out of school. Not Jim. He wasn't going anywhere without his pals.This is indeed a love story!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The three of them continued to pal around, play sports, earn a living and be happy, carefree young men. Then it happened. World War II. The Big One. This would be the first separation of these three dear friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Their colorful love story takes on a different hue now as members of the fair sex slowly steal into their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim went into the Navy, positioned off the coast of Normandy on the USS Texas during the D-Day invasion. He also served in the Pacific. Jim had met his future wife, Dorothy, in the little town in which they all grew up, aptly named Fairview. It wasn't long before sports took somewhat of a backseat to the feminine charms of Dorothy. They soon would marry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ted had also been distracted from all things sports as he matured into his older teens. He had met a lovely young girl named Ruth and they married before Ted joined the Merchant Marine. The years would take him around the world but his heart was always back in Fairview with the lovely Ruth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My dad, Jack, received the Greetings from Uncle Sam and soon found himself drafted into the US Army, stationed in Texas and Louisiana before being shipped out to what was supposed to be duty in the Philippines. Fate stepped in, however, and steered the ship and his life in a much different direction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Japanese had attacked the Philippines so my dad's ship was diverted to Australia where he would soon win a marital victory, not necessarily a martial one. There, in Melbourne, Australia, he met the love of his life, my mother, the great Australian beauty, and dancer, Iris Robertson.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The times being uncertain, as they are during war years with no one knowing what would happen in this unstable world, whirlwind courtships, and marriages were not uncommon. Within four months of meeting, my mother and father married.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During these years, the best buddies were settling down with their wives and the children started arriving.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. My dad was sent to Hollandia, New Guinea, and after a long time, was shipped back home to the US, where my mother and I joined him 8 months later. He had been away from home for almost 5 years, a sacrifice hard to imagine today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim and his wife had four children and relocated to Arizona precipitated by the poor health of their middle daughter who suffered from severe asthma. The dry, desert heat would help her, they reasoned, and off they went - another rent in the rich tapestry of the three friends' lives, but a necessary one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meantime, enhancing the love story, Ted and his wife Ruth had three children, all boys whom they named Jack, Jim and Ted! Ted, Ruth and boys moved to California, motivated by a wonderful job opportunity for Ted. He landed a job with Shiley Corporation where he invented the blood oxygenator used in cardiac surgery. Years later he would be named California Inventor of the Year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With Jack still living in New Jersey, Jim and family in Arizona, and Ted and family in California, the visits were not as often now as any of them wanted. They stayed in touch though by telephone and letters and the occasional visit. How wonderful it would have been for them had they been able to avail themselves of the computer technology with webcams of today, but none of them can be persuaded to try it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My parents' marriage would last for 50+ years, ending only because of the devastating disease of Supranuclear Palsy that would claim my mother's life and make my dad the first widower of the three friends, a most unwanted distinction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, Jim's wife, Dorothy was the next of the wives to pass away, she of cancer, after 50+ years of marriage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It wasn't long before Ted would join their ranks of widower, when his wife of 50+ years, Ruth, passed away a few hours before 9/11.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The three best buddies were now widowers and living far apart from one another. How strange that all three of them would outlive their beloved wives when statistically women outlive men. After Ted's wife passed away, Jim remarked how incredible it would be if all three of them could share a house together and share the rest of their lives together, to be close together again, to play a little ball together in their twilight years. But life happens and we all must make the most of what we have left.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim now spends his time running marathons and invariably comes home with a gold medal. So far, he's won 9 of them. He quips that there aren't many 86-year-olds to compete with him. Ted spends his days golfing, and reading, and enjoying the California lifestyle. My dad, Jack, who is as witty and humorous as he ever was, spends his time writing poems and limericks and recently had a short story that he had written during the war, bound and printed. These men are not going gently into that good night. They are an inspiration to all who know them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim visits Ted in California from time to time. Before their wives passed away, Jim and Ted and wives visited my dad and mother in Florida where they had relocated years before. It was a wonderful reunion. Their conversation was centered mainly around, of course, sports! No one knew it at the time but this would probably be the last time the three best pals would be together.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My dad hates to fly. So the three of them confine their contact to phone calls and letters. But what wonderful phone calls they are. They can spend hours on the phone talking about "the good old days" of their youth, their sports accomplishments and wonderful reminiscences of 75 years of profound friendship, of three lives well lived, and well loved. The love story that began all those years ago continues, and may it continue for many more years for these three remarkable gentlemen. Based on true events, the story of Captain Corelli has captures the hearts of millions everywhere. Like every iconic love story ever made, the setting is simple yet dramatic. During World War 2, the local Doctors daughter of the small Greek Island of Kefalonia, waves goodbye to her fisherman fiance as he heads out to join the war effort.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meanwhile Captain Corelli and his troops from Italy settle into the island with tragic consequences. When their paths cross, the tale unfolds as they fall passionately in love despite the circumstances and overcome the huge obstacles they meet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At least they do in the film. The book however takes a slightly different approach and is less "chicken soup for the soul" and more of a hard hitting war story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite this there is no denying that the location for this truly memorable story could not have been better. Kefalonia looks every inch the dramatic location needed for such a turbulent story. Ragged cliffs guard the white sands and the pearly blue sea. The island has become synonymous romance and love and since the Hollywood film hit the screens, tourism here has boomed.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it is easy to see why. The lush green lands of Kefalonia are the perfect to create your own fairytale love story. Some stories look like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I cannot earn a lot of money right now because the economy is bad and because my former manager embezzled money from me so I can't trust anyone to work for me and......&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the real story that this person has deep within is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am not successful; I will never have what others have; I cannot count on anyone to be loyal to me....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are her (or his) deeply held and sometimes even unconscious beliefs about her/himself. These beliefs, or this STORY will define how you show up in life! That's why it is so important to know your Love Story.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your Love Story is the set of deeply held beliefs you hold about yourself in relation to love. These stories are usually formed very early in our lives, before we have the ability to understand the meaning we are giving to those experiences. As a result, they are often unconscious and we may not even know we have them! For example, one client, I'll call her Monica, struggles with intense fears of abandonment and will act in ways that push men away in her relationships. Monica was not really consciously aware of what her Love Story was or how it was formed until we worked together to transform her story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By doing some guided visualization exercises, Monica was able to connect patterns in her relationships with some early life experiences that created her story that "people who I depend on for love always leave". Once she could identify her story, she was able to shift those old beliefs by using the strengths she had as a adult to 'rewrite' this story and come up with a new one. Her new story became, "I can't control what other people do, but I can make good choices to include loving, giving, healthy people in my life". Once she was able to change the old Love Story and create a new, more powerful one, Monica began to show up differently in her life. And guess what? However, seldom can a movie that is adapted from a novel gain acclaim. This does not mean that the movie is of low quality, but audiences expect more from movie adaptations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the year of 1999, German writer Gunter Grass won the Nobel Prize for his virgin novel The Tin Drum. For years, I had not finished it because it is indeed a river novel. However, I made up my mind to finish reading after I saw the movie The Tin Drum that directed by Volker Shlondorff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After I saw the movie, I read the whole book and I find that both the movie and the book are quite good and the movie is even better. I believe that the success of this movie is mainly because that the director bravely trim some plots and details of the novel.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As we all know, Gunter Grass is a great linguist, artist and poet before writing novel. You will find that his novels reflect the culture and politics at his time. Also, he is a writer who has strong social responsibility. Thus, readers may find the backgrounds of his novels are rather complicated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hardly can I image that such an informative story be told in only 142 minutes. However, Volker Shlondorff did this and he did well. He broke the limitations set by Gunter Grass, found a visible clue for the movie and recreated the story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You don not have to take too serious when you see the movie. To me, it is merely a love story, several love stories exactly. This has involved a vintage collection of mostly pre-modern Japanese lacquer wares on display in southern California not very long ago. The images which have been engraved on several beautiful pieces in the Avant Collection include references to the literature of the courts. Interpretations of poems appear on lacquer regularly from the 13th century to the present time. The Six Immortals (872-945 AD) in the preface to the "Kokinshu" anthology form the basis for early literary quotes in lacquer. By the 18th century, images from poetry about the seasons of romance, themes from court fiction, or images from noh drama held an important presence among lacquer designs. When the Avant Ono no Komachi "suzuribako" was produced, layers of reference had accumulated around a theme like Komachi's. Therefore, the sad story of Ono no Komachi is indeed an interesting one to reflect upon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Komachi lived a life that became a legend in her own time and has grown since in popular fascination. She was a stunning beauty of a young woman. A number of interested young men attempted to gain her favor. However, Komachi was not interested in any of the men who tried to pursue her. According to the mythology which surrounded her, she informed one suitor that if he came to visit her one hundred times only then would she allow him his earnest wish. This man was madly in love with Komachi, so he agreed to the arrangement. After many visits, he began to feel confident about his chance of success in the end. Then there came a night when one of his parents died. He was summoned away for a time of mourning, so he could not visit Komachi on that occasion. When he returned to her, she promptly rejected him. Later, this man also died in a great soul-wrenching depression which was caused by the cruel way his lover had treated him. Consequently, Komachi spent the rest of her life alone. She lived beyond the age of one hundred as a destitute, old hag. Despite the enormous legend, there is very little in Ono no Komachi's original poetry to give details about her biography. There are poetic subjects of the spurning of a lover and the lifelong regrets about her fading beauty. In the end, her beauty was lost forever.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The design on one suzuribako- a container of brushes, ink stone, and ink stick -illustrates the famous Ono no Komachi at age one hundred in a Japanses play called "Komachi at the Gateway Temple." On the night of Tanabata, a celebration of the meeting of two constellations on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month, a priest from the temple Sekidera and his servant come near a hut near the mountains. The aged woman, known as "the ruin of Komachi," is supposed to reside there. This priest brings along children who are interested in the study of classic poetry. Their purpose is to request the interpretation of two of her very famous poems. One poem goes like this: "This abandoned house, shining in the mountain village. How many night has autumn spent there? Seeing the moonlight, spilling down through the trees, My heart fills to the brim with autumn." (Translation by Jane Hirshfield and Mariko Aratami).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the elegant lid of this container, Komachi smiles and reveals her rotted teeth. She is seated upon a straw raincoat and watching the moon over the faraway mountains. Her kimono is wrapped around her body in a loose way. The wardrobe also bears dragon roundels over a diaper pattern. All of these aspects make up a formal design that dates back to her noteworthy past in the imperial court of Japan. However, those glorious days are long gone in this sad portrait of an old woman with little comfort left in life. On this box her hut is situated before a brushwood fence with young pine trees in the front and a bamboo grove in the back. Both of these types of plants are symbolic in Japan of endurance through adversity. On the outer face of the box lid, the moon and clustered chrysanthemums are springing from a basket to Komachi's side. There are indicators of an early autumn which is in harmony with the seventh lunar month. It is interesting to remember that chrysanthemums likewise are symbolic of long life. This engraved portrait is a powerful reminder of the famous story of this once beautiful, young woman.... and her tragic, bitter fate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Japanese lacquer collections are worth the time to study thoroughly, and then to reflect upon. In addition to their timeless beauty, they create a profoundly Asian atmosphere simply because of their historical reference. The Avant Collection is something only for the serious, wealthy collector to be sure. However, there are likely many fine replicated pieces which would suit your home or office very well. Take some time to learn what is available. Or so it seemed - but ultimately I came to believe my grandmother was prompting my writing from beyond the grave!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why my belief? Because I had no sooner created the characters than they became independent of me - doing their own thing, ignoring the plans I had for them! It was my heroine especially who behaved so willfully - a heroine fashioned to a degree on my grandmother's character.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'd best explain that grandma had been an actress who gave up the West End stage to marry a foreigner and live with him and his outlandish family in a castle in Czechoslovakia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had never understood why she did this, since she had lived for the theater, or why she often expressed her wish for me to write her life-story. It was long after she died that I realized hers had been a most unusual life. But I was no biographer.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My mind was too fertile to stick to facts, even had I known them. Knowing no more than the basics, beyond which she had never elucidated, I suddenly and inexplicably had the strong urge to set to work on a romantic novel that took the thread of grandma's life and then went where this led.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, incredible events emerged - and I was sometimes staggered by their emergence! It was soon as if I were simply a witness to all that was happening to the characters. Did I say 'happening to them'? By their wayward actions, they were making them happen!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I seemed to have no control over their behavior - some of which I found truly shocking!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So who was in control? Whose fingers were directing mine over my keyboard to produce these dramatic and sometimes tragic developments?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Obviously I can't say for sure, but when words appeared on my computer screen that I did not even understand until after consulting a dictionary I began to have my suspicions. Grandma was a strong-willed woman, you see, and I doubt that even death would stand in her way if she'd made up her mind that her wish was finally to be fulfilled through me!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What was I to make of the love story theme that had seemed to evolve all by itself? If my grandmother was really behind my writing, was she telling me that the events I had documented were based in reality? How thrilling, if so, since I had always had the impression that she had somehow missed out on true love.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You see, I had never even seen my maternal grandparents together in the same country! I had visited grandma often in London and grandpa less often in Vienna. But I had danced with him, on a boat on the Danube under the stars, and seen the expression in his eyes when he spoke of her. That he loved her still was all too evident... but how did she feel?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe I now know. Maybe she had told me as words poured ostensibly from me onto paper. It was released in 1997 and was a great commercial and critical success, winning 11 Academy Awards (the first to do so since 'Ben Hur') and 3 Grammys.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was was written, directed, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron, who also won the Academy Award for best director. 'Titanic' became the highest grossest movie of all time, earning $1.8 billion at the box office, until it was surpassed in 2010 by 'Avatar', another movie by James Cameron.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The story concerns two young people from different social classes - Leonardo DiCaprio appears as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet has the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater - who fall in love while aboard the doomed maiden voyage of the Titanic in 1912. Although the love story is fictitious, many of the characters - crew and passengers - were based on those who were actually aboard the real vessel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='more'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For instance, the brash Margaret "Molly" Brown (played by Kathy Bates) was famous for her heroic efforts (not shown in the movie) of trying to save drowning passengers. She later became known as the "Unsinkable Molly Brown".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There were many scenes in the movie, although only briefly touched on, which added greatly to the emotional impact of the inevitable sinking on passengers and crew. Two historical characters were Isador and Ida Strauss. Isador was a former owner of R.H. Macy and Company and was also a former NY Congressman. In the movie, his wife Ida has a chance of leaving the ship in a lifeboat but declines and returns to her husband, saying she will honor her wedding vow and remain with Isidor. She is last seen embracing him as they lie on a bed in their stateroom, with the water rushing in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Layers of emotion are added with other scenes that depict obvious heroism by crew members. Joseph Bell, the Chief Engineer, and his men work desperately until the last moments to maintain the power for lights and so distress signals can be sent. All are lost.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wallace Hartley, the bandmaster, and his orchestra, continue to play uplifting music to the very end, even as the ship sinks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The two lovers, Rose and Jack, initially come together when he rescues her from a suicide attempt brought about by her despondency at a loveless engagement, having been pressured to marry a wealthy suitor, Cal, because of her family's financial needs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jack is scorned as inferior by Rose's mother and Cal but he does manage to attend a stuffy first-class dinner, where he renews his acquaintance with Rose and their bond deepens.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next day, Rose defies her mother and Cal and goes to the bow of the ship where she meets Jack, realizes her feelings for him and the two passionately embrace. They then go to the privacy of Rose's stateroom and she asks him to sketch her wearing only the Heart of the Ocean, a blue diamond necklace which was an expensive engagement gift from Cal. She later leaves the sketch in Cal's safe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While attempting to escape from Cal's bodyguard, Rose and Jack enter the cargo hold where they enter one of the cars stored there and make love on the back seat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They witness the collision with the iceberg and overhear the lookouts discussing how serious it is. Rose and Jack decide to warn her mother and Cal but, in the meantime, Cal has discovered the nude sketch of Rose and furiously plants the necklace on Jack; then accuses him of stealing it. Jack is arrested and taken below deck, where he is handcuffed to a pipe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The emotional elements of the 'Titanic' are very powerful, with the later scenes showing the aftermath of the collision, the desperate attempts of those aboard to find shelter on a lifeboat, or the brave acceptance of their fate. As there were not enough lifeboats, more than 1500 passengers and crew perished in this catastrophe. Throughout, the musical score strongly reflects their feelings and the dangers they face. The closing song, 'My Heart Will Go On' (sung by Celine Dion) won an Academy Award and two Grammies.
